A bridge between the worlds

As this painting started to take shape, I saw two separated worlds. There was somehow a hostile vibe between them, perhaps I was projecting the disturbing world events that overwhelm the media lately. Then the bridge and the sailboat of Hope emerged. The impression of the embracing couple was already there, I just brought them into focus, as a symbol that only love can cross the icy distance between the worlds. 

The words from DMB song came to mind and I just had to add them to the canvas:

The space between
The tears we cry
It's the laughter keeps us coming back for more...

...We're strange allies 

 With warring hearts...

This is an Original 24 by 20 inch mixed media and collage oil painting on a gallery-wrapped canvas. It comes with the wiring on the back and is ready to be installed on your wall, right out of the box.

A bridge between the worlds is a part of "A million miles away" series  of different paintings that have one thing in common - I let them paint themselves. This is one of my favourite art-creating processes.

 I put on some music and start to paint with a blank mind, "a million miles away", having no particular idea of what I wish to paint. Often, I like to play collaging different colours, textures, some favourite quotes or bits of poems,  I try to keep it spontaneous and have fun with the freedom that stage offers. At some point, it becomes an ugly mess and I try not to let it scare me, telling myself that I will make sense of it all - eventually. And I do!  Mostly... 

The next stage is dressing the collage in colours, calming it down with neutrals, putting on layers of texture media and paint, and suddenly the painting comes alive. I love the moment when I look at it and go "oh, yeah, THAT's what it wanted to be!"
